In this article, let’s get to know Angela Hull.
Angela is an Assistant Account Executive and helps manage a busy and growing portfolio of business and corporate clients within SUREWiSE’s Business Unit. Angela is an experienced insurance broking professional who provides valuable assistance to her clients who seek professional advice and quality insurance coverage to help protect their assets and risk exposures.
Born in Darwin, Northern Territory, Angela moved to Adelaide, South Australia with her mum and brother in the early 1980’s. Today, Angela is married with children.
Prior to starting her career in the insurance industry, Angela was a waitress for six years at the Glenelg Golf Club. Angela entered the insurance industry in 2004 the day after returning from working and living in Japan for over two and a half years.
Angela has worked for a number of insurance brokerages and over that time has specialised in claims management and account broking. Her skills and expertise were also utilised in her position as Team Leader for a previous brokerage. Angela has benefited from her experience working on global, corporate and SME clients throughout her working career in the industry.
When did you make the move to join the team at SUREWiSE?
I joined the SUREWiSE team in January 2018 and I already feel like I’m part of the close-knit team.
What do you like most about working in the insurance industry?
I like building rapport with clients and insurers. It’s great having the relationships I have formed with clients and insurers, especially when they come to me for help and advice.
What do you like most about working for SUREWiSE?
The team environment at SUREWiSE is great. There is a huge pool of knowledge that I and everyone can tap into. We have exceptional learning opportunities as well as growth and development opportunities which are important to me.
What is the most challenging aspect you find working in the insurance industry?
Managing client’s expectations of coverage and premiums versus the insurer’s policy wordings and premium requirements in a hardening market (particularly with risks containing Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)).
What are some of your recent major achievements from working in the insurance industry?
I completed the Diploma of Insurance Broking in 2018, completed the Allianz Young Eagle Program in 2017 and completed the QBE Equip Program in 2014.
What are some of your top hobbies?
I enjoy travelling, watching movies and reading books.
Where have you travelled to?
I have travelled to Japan, New Zealand (North Island) and have visited every State and Territory in Australia.
Where is your most favourite travel location and why?
I loved my time in Okayama, Japan. I lived there for two and a half years. It’s a quirky Japanese town where old meets new. I’ve made a lot of friends and I still keep in regular contact. I actually returned to Japan two years ago to attend a friend’s wedding. I was an English teacher and studied year 12 in Japan.
If you could have a month-long holiday anywhere in the world, where would you travel to and why?
I would travel to England, Scotland and Ireland if I had the opportunity so I can delve into their history and see where my family’s heritage came from.
Do you have any future travel aspirations?
We are currently saving to take our kids to Japan.
What is your favourite food?
My favourite food (besides chocolate) is Japenese food.
In the whole wide world, what is your favourite restaurant you have been to?
I cannot recall the name, but it was a little street food vendor in Okayama, Japan which make great okonomiyaki which is a Japanese savory pancake.
What is your favourite food dish?
My favourite food dish would have to be Sukiayki which is a Japanese beef hot pot dish.
What is your favourite movie?
I can narrow this down to two movies which I like equally. They are “Zoolander” and “Coming to America”.
Who is your favourite actor or actress and why?
My favourite actor is definitely Robert Downey Jr. I find him to be an amazing actor who can perform in various genres ranging from comedy, drama to ironman.
Who is your favourite book that you have read?
“The Outlander Series” written by Diana Gabaldon.
Who is your favourite author?
James Clavell.
What motivates you?
My family.
What is important to you?
Family, friends, work-life balance, being challenged and having the opportunity to continually learn.
What makes Angela tick?
I like to laugh, I try to see the positive in every scenario and I like to help others.
What makes you happy?
Spending time with my family makes me very happy. I’m also happy when I get to travel and when I can have some time to myself to enjoy quiet moments reading a book. In fact, I have read fifteen books so far in 2018!
Is there anything unusual that not many people know about you?
I can roll my tongue in a twist motion.
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
I have heaps of embarrassing things happen to me but the one that comes to mind is when I started school in Japan and had to give a speech in Japanese on my first day when I couldn’t speak more than three works of Japanese.
Where would you like to be in five years time?
In five years time, I would like to be managing my own portfolio of clients and being a mentor for up and coming insurance professionals.
